There's no better place to be than Munising, MI to celebrate our nation's birthday! Our Independence Day celebration has something for everyone. From fun games to great food and some awesome fireworks over Munising Bay; we have it all! Listed below is a schedule of events for the fourth of July festivities. Enjoy!
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
July 2nd Schedule
 "Firecracker 2-Blocker"
Soap Box Race – 5 p.m.
- Line up at the corner of Cedar & Varnum.
- Calling all boys & girls ages 8-15 to compete in our soap box race! Age brackets and bike wheel size to be categorized. A fun event to watch as well!
July 3rd Schedule
- Community Dance & All Class Reunion – 7 p.m. - 12 a.m.,
- Alger Arena - Varnum St., live music by Evergreen 7, must be 21 and older, $5 cover charge, ALTRAN transportation available FREE! Babysitter references available (387-5636). Sponsored by the Kiwanis.
July 4th Schedule
- Worship at the church of your choice
- 8:30 a.m. Fun Run – Bayshore Park
- $7 entry fee, registration 7:30 a.m.
- A 5K run with lots of prizes for a variety of categories.
- 10:00 a.m. Flag Raising – All Veterans Memorial
- A beautiful tribute to our nation and those whom made it possible
 12:00 p.m. Parade Starts – see map below
- A top-notch parade with all the traditional elements.
- 1:30 p.m. Watermelon Eating Contest – Bayshore Park
- Has long been a tradition and until recent years, was held in conjunction with the pie eating contest. Bill Cox III ran both of these events for years.
- 2:00 p.m. “Take It or Leave It” – Moose Lodge
- A fun game similar to the hit show on NBC, "Deal or No Deal." Great chance to win some prizes.
- 2:30 p.m. Free Ice Cream – Bayshore Park
 3:30 p.m. Pet Parade
- Contestants meet at the Munising Post Office at least 30 minutes before parade time.
- Almost as big as the main parade, pet owners dress their dogs and themselves costumes. This was headed by Marilyn Hillier for years and we are thankful for PSB keeping this event a tradition.
 4:30 p.m. Waterfight by the Munising Volunteer Fire Dept.
- Elm Avenue, near Superior St.
- You know this is happening when you hear the long fire siren and the city park is almost empty of people. Watch as the firefighters battle each other with their powerful fire hoses. Don't expect to stay too dry while watching this!
 5:30 p.m. Grease Pole – City Pier
- Slide yourself across a greased pole to reach the end flag. A dip in Lake Superior if you slip! Was cancelled one year because of low water levels.
- 6:00 p.m. Free Quarters – Bayshore Park
- Nothing like free money for the kids! This used to be free dimes but inflation has caught up with 4th of July as well.
- 8:00 p.m. Egg Toss Contest – Bayshore Park
- The name says it all! Open to all ages.
- 10:30 p.m. FIREWORKS! – Bayshore Park
- Under the leadership of Sonny Putvin, a great bunch of volunteers put together the greatest show in the state. One viewer from Detroit said there you can see the fireworks but here you can feel them! Sonny Putvin took over the organizing from Royce Pierson.
